When a client is using consignment offerings, I like to ask the consignor a lot of questions about the package.
I want to fully understand what the guest is buying, so I can better describe and sell the package when I’m onstage.
I go far beyond merely reading the sheet the consignor provides to the nonprofit.
- I watch YouTubers describe the destination and hotel.
- I research airfare to the location and determine driving times to popular spots.
- I read through dozens of Yelp and Google reviews.
On occasion, I’ll find information in the consignment marketing materials that needs some clarification.
For example, last fall I was selling a trip to a high-end hotel in Europe. On TripAdvisor, I read through pages of reviews from guests who had stayed there. A few guests wrote that the hotel had a good complimentary breakfast.
Breakfast? Nowhere in the consignor’s marketing literature had I read anything about a complimentary breakfast.
I reached out to the consignor for clarification, and learned that an over-the-top breakfast buffet WAS included for the buyer. During the item sale, I made sure to include this detail.
Asking your consignor more questions to clarify a package helps prevent problems later. We want guests to know exactly what they are getting.
The breakfast was an example of something that should have been included in marketing literature, but in today’s video, I share an exclusion that should have been revealed in the auction consignor’s terms and conditions.
Learn about it in the video.
P.S. In the video, I talk about “Mastering Nonprofit Auction Consignment” course. Clients can watch the course for free in the Digital Lounge, but anyone can purchase the course. Learn more here.
