November 2022: Housatonic Valley Association’s “Auction for the Environment”
The Housatonic Valley Association’s gala Auction for the Environment is set for Sunday, Nov. 20, 2022 with auctioneer Sherry Truhlar taking the stage at 3 p.m. HVA board member Christine Baranski, critically acclaimed Emmy and Tony Award-winning actress, is chairing the Benefit Auction Committee. This is the second year Sherry worked with the nonprofit on its event. RESULTS: A record-breaking ~$200k was raised.

In his Vineyard Gazette article, Possible Dreams Fundraiser Makes Giving Back an Art Form, reporter Diego Lasarte writes, “Quick wit and playful banter between hosts Seth Meyers and Sherry Truhlar, as well as an extensive assortment of unique experiences, fueled the bidding at the 44th Possible Dreams Auction on a scorching-hot Sunday evening.” The event raised more than $670,950, beating the 2021 total of $480,000, and the 2020 total of $272,000.
July 2022: Martha’s Vineyard Community Services achieves post-pandemic gala record
In the MV Times article, “Possible Dreams Breaks Record: The hybrid fundraising auction pulled in over half a million,” reporter Abigail Rosen writes, “Quick wit and playful banter between hosts Seth Meyers and Sherry Truhlar, as well as an extensive assortment of unique experiences, fueled the bidding at the 44th Possible Dreams Auction on a scorching-hot Sunday evening.” The event raised over $670,950, beating the 2021 total of $480,000, and the 2020 event (which was 100 percent virtual) of $272,000.

The Vineyard Times covered Possible Dreams in Laughs and Generosity Set the Pace at Possible Dreams Auction. Auctioneer Sherry Truhlar worked with emcee Seth Meyers at the event. Final fundraising totals were about $480,000.
May 2021: Virtual gala styles explained in Special Events Galore! by Wiley
The massive shift in fundraising events during the COVID-19 pandemic led many nonprofits to produce virtual galas. Sherry Truhlar explained the different types of virtual approaches in an article for Special Events Galore!, a subscription newsletter published by Wiley Subscription Services, Inc. It was titled, “Virtual Events: Which type of gala is best for your organization?”
May 2021: Actor Henry Winkler shares at Smart Kids with Learning Disabilities virtual gala
Smart Kids with Learning Disabilities held its 21st Anniversary Gala, which included a virtual pre-show whereby Henry Winkler “enthralled his audience, describing how he became a renowned actor and author, following his struggles as a child with dyslexia and ADHD.” Sherry Truhlar served as auctioneer; the event raised nearly $110,000.
May 2021: Seth Meyers returns to host Possible Dreams
Sherry Truhlar will join Seth Meyers at Possible Dreams, the fundraiser for Martha’s Vineyard Community Services. The hybrid event (virtual and in-person event) will be one of the first on the island.
February 2021: Housatonic Valley Association to host virtual gala
Housatonic Valley Association’s only annual fundraiser will be held via Zoom. As is tradition, the gala will be hosted by actor Christine Baranski, who will also host a pre-gala reception. Seth Meyers and Margo Martindale have contributed auction items. “Acclaimed auctioneer Sherry Truhlar’s energy and humor will shine from the stage.”
December 2020: “Virtual Gala Insights” shared in industry magazine
Auctioneer magazine is the official magazine of the National Auctioneers Association. Sherry Truhlar spoke at the association’s Benefit Auction Summit in September, and her remarks were included into an adapted article, “Virtual Gala Insights: What did 2020 teach us about pivoting.”
Red Apple Auctions closed the extraordinary year of 2020 having worked with 33 clients on their virtual galas.
June 2020: Library After Dark Gala moves to virtual platform
Friends of the Library, Montgomery County rapidly transitioned its Library After Dark Gala fundraiser from an in-person event to a virtual one and raised over $38,000 for Montgomery County libraries. “The event was more successful than we could have imagined,”said FOLMC Executive Director Ari Z. Brooks, MSW in the press release.
Red Apple Auctions collaborated with the nonprofit to provide a complete online solution that was able to move the gala to an online virtual format in 8 days.
August 2019: LGLC gala raises $240k to preserve water and land in Lake George, NY
Lake George Land Conservancy works to protect land of Lake George, NY, so the crystal clear waters of Lake George will be preserved for future generations. Nearly $143,000 was generated in the paddle raise activity. Per the Adirondack Almanack article, “The evening’s auctioneer, Sherry Truhlar, urged the audience to “plant the tree now” so that future generations can enjoy the rewards of a protected watershed and lake.”
August 2019: Martha’s Vineyard, MA fundraiser for MVCS
Over $400,000 was raised for Martha’s Vineyard Community Services at its annual auction, Possible Dreams. Per the MV Times article, “What’s really special is that not everyone lives on the Island full-time,” Truhlar told The Times, “yet they recognize the importance of MVCS and show up to this event. It’s remarkable.”
July 2019: Speakers prepare for industry-wide Bridge Conference in Washington, DC
As one of the nation’s largest professional gatherings in the nonprofit industry, the Bridge Conference is the combined effort of the Association of Fundraising Professionals, Washington, DC Metro Area Chapter (AFP DC) and the Direct Marketing Association of Washington (DMAW). For the second year, Red Apple Auctions’ president Sherry Truhlar was selected to speak. She’ll be presenting with two clients on the topic, “Transforming Events: Making Hard Decisions to Meet Financial Goals.”
July 2019: Salvation Army Women’s Auxiliary prepares to host 70th Anniversary Platinum Celebration Fashion Show
The Salvation Army Women’s Auxiliary is ramping up to host its anniversary event in October. Charity auctioneer Sherry Truhlar has been retained to oversee the fundraising activities at the celebration.

April 2019: CASABLANCA fundraiser to be held in Trident Aircraft hangar
The charity is CASA, the theme is CASABLANCA, and the venue is an aircraft hangar. True to the movie, guests will be surrounded by vintage planes, cars, casino games, and live piano music before fundraising auctioneer Sherry Truhlar calls the crowd together for a paddle raiser.

The Bridge Conference is one of the nation’s largest professional gatherings of the nonprofit industry. July 2018: The Vine magazine spotlights the 40th anniversary of the Possible Dreams auction in Martha’s Vineyard, MA
Charity auctioneer Sherry Truhlar will return to oversee the Possible Dreams auction, benefiting Martha’s Vineyard Community Services. The fundraiser celebrates its 40th anniversary in 2018 and is expected to raise $500,000. The Vine, a monthly lifestyle tabloid, interviewed the two women organizing the event and asks them to share how the gala has changed and previews some items to be sold.
June 2018: Truhlar selected to speak for third year at AFP Florida’s conference, Planet Philanthropy
Fundraising auctioneer Sherry Truhlar traveled to Fort Lauderdale, FL on June 19, 2018 to present for the third year at Planet Philanthropy, the annual statewide conference for The Association of Fundraising Professionals Florida Caucus. This year’s topic focused on smaller auction fundraisers grossing $40k to $100k. Two clients joined her, sharing practical ideas that were used in events hosted by the Lions Eye Institute for Transplant and Research in Tampa, FL and The Boys & Girls Club in St. Augustine, FL. The session was titled, “Event 180°: A different direction for better revenues at small fundraising events.”
May 2018: Cover page feature at CASA’s Spring Soiree (a Fund a Need-only event)
CASA of the Mid-Shore’s annual fundraiser secured pre-event and post-event coverage, including a large photo on the front page. (Sherry Truhlar sits on the left.) Torrential rain didn’t dampen giving. In the front page article, Truhlar details how the CASA auction was different than other auctions, and the pre-event article commented on Truhlar’s “special spark” for getting guests to give.

October 2017: Louisville’s Voice-Tribune captures Truhlar running paddle raiser at Tower Awards
The Tower Awards for Women Leaders is an annual event honoring women leaders in their fields and highlighting them as role models to Presentation Academy students and the larger Kentuckiana community. For the sixth year, female auctioneer Sherry Truhlar has led the fundraising portion of the evening.

For the second year, Sherry traveled to Hawaii to work with The Japan-America Society of Hawaii at their annual fundraiser. The event occurs in early December so guests are encouraged consider the holidays when bidding. For the first time ever, JASH reported that all items sold.

The furthest traveled auction for 2015 was in Honolulu, HI where auctioneer Sherry Truhlar assisted the Japan-America Society of Hawaii (JASH) at their fundraiser. The 2015 Holiday Gala & Auction attracts about 250 supporters, raising money for programs that support understanding and friendship between the peoples of Japan and the United States.

The website Top Nonprofits asked 10 of its fundraising experts to provide a list of the top three to five fundraising books they recommend. The Essential Fundraising Handbook for Small Nonprofits, co-authored by Sherry Truhlar, is number five on the list. Each of the books co-authors tackled a subject on fundraising as it relates to small nonprofits. Truhlar’s chapter is on silent auctions. May 2015: Amarillo Magazine captures Sherry Truhlar and guest at wine auction, “Vintage Amarillo”
Amarillo Magazine online posted photographs of attendees at Vintage Amarillo,” a wine auction benefiting the Amarillo Symphony. The bi-annual event raises money for the Amarillo Symphony’s education programs. The 1920’s-themed event had a silent and live auction filled with hard to find wines, exquisite vintages, dinners, trips, and more.
May 2015: Amarillo Globe-News reports on “Vintage Amarillo.” Fundraising auctioneer Sherry Truhlar oversees wine auction.
Sherry oversaw the Amarillo Symphony Guild’s Vintage Amarillo fundraiser, and the paper was onsite to capture it. The bi-annual event raises money for various symphony programs.

For its eighth annual Gala Guide showcasing signature events, SocialMiami selected The Children’s Hero Awards, sponsored by the Family Resource Center of South Florida. November 2014: Raising money in Milwaukee, WI
Sherry Truhlar was invited to Milwaukee, WI for the “Voices of Hope” gala, raising $550,000 to benefit St. Marcus Lutheran School. This non-traditional inner city school is dramatically changing the lives of its students, with test scores moving into top percentiles. The school wrote, “Auctioneer Sherry Truhlar, Red Apple Auctions, got rave reviews from the crowd. Her wit kept guests engaged and energized as she featured new live auction items.”

Tamburello, Jr. “writes about his jaunts to playhouses, diners, restaurants, music halls, and places that he ends up in by mistake.” (Based on that description, I can only presume he landed at a benefit auction in Waltham, MA by mistake!) Fall 2011: Camillus House’s Hope for All gala listed as one of Miami’s “Most Notable Philanthropic Events”
Camillus House’s December gala was listed by Ocean Drive as a key upcoming event. The charity provides services to the homeless of Miami-Dade County. This is the fourth year Red Apple Auctions has served as auctioneer for the event.
October 2011: CASA of Greater Prince William draws 1,000 supporters and hits record-setting donations, despite weather-related venue change.
“Evening Under the Stars” has been the most well-attended gala in Prince William county, but not necessarily the most profitable. Red Apple Auctions was hired to change that. Live auction items jumped from selling at 80% of value to 140% of value; the cash appeal grew from $3000 to $13,000+. Read the press release.

Capitol File was on hand to witness the 21st Annual Chef’s Best Dinner and Auction at The Washington Hilton. The event is attended by over 1000 guests and the live auction is a significant portion of the program. Benefit auctioneer Sherry Truhlar was photographed working.

The Certified Auctioneer Institute (CAI) program is held at Indiana University in Bloomington, IN and overseen by the National Auctioneers Foundation. The three-year training focuses on fostering specific skills needed to operate a successful auction firm.

The CMP Conclave is the global annual conference of Certified Meeting Professionals (CMPs). The professional designation is overseen by the Convention Industry Council and demonstrates planners with advanced knowledge in event management. Truhlar is believed to be the only professional benefit auctioneer who also is a CMP.

June 2009: The Georgetowner tips hat to Red Apple Auctions in social scene section
Six days a week, Food and Friends delivers three meals a day to more than 1,400 individuals living with life-challenging illnesses. The non-profit’s Chef’s Best gala is almost as complex, with over 1,000 guests sampling food from 50 chefs. The Georgetowner’s Mary Bird observed as the Red Apple Auctions team oversaw the auction.
May 2009: Truhlar oversees inaugural benefit auction for American Society of Association Executives (ASAE)
The May 2009 issue of AUCTIONEER magazine, the official publication of the National Auctioneers Association (NAA), updated its members about NAA’s work with the ASAE. The group’s inaugural benefit auction was conducted by Sherry Truhlar at the Association’s Springtime Expo. The results prompted ASAE to schedule another benefit auction at its annual meeting, to be held in Toronto in August 2009.
